Please join us in the effort to preserve and share Portville's history!
The Portville Historical and Preservation Society is a not-for-profit organization, managed and run
entirely by volunteers. Your much-needed support helps defray the operating expenses of our
organization, which mainly covers our Maple Avenue office and the associated utilities.
As a member, you will receive our newsletter, "The Homespun Collage," featuring interesting stories
about Portville and its rich history of people and events. We began The Homespun Collage in March,
1986, and continue to publish three issues each year.
In May 2007, our first issue's stories had a Memorial Day theme. Relive your own memories of
Portville's Memorial Day as you read Ronda Shaner Pollock's fond recollections of the traditional parades
and band performances. Read about the old Tanneries and Leather factory in Portville. The June/July
2007 issue featured the early village schools and school memories, just in time for the annual PCS
Alumni Banquet. This issue included a collection of photos from our archives of old school classes and
the old Portville Basket Factory. Our third issue was published in November 2007 and focused on Civil
War interests, such as short biographies and photos of Portville's oldest veterans, Portville's H.W.
Wessells G.A.R. Post, and stories and photos in our "new" 1899 cookbook publication, From Emerette's
