Portville Hall of Fame
Eva Taggerty was born October 15, 1960, in Olean, the daughter of Bernard
and Geraldine Taggerty.
She attended Kindergarten through Grade12 at Portville Central School,
graduating in the Class of 1979. She was a member of National Honor Society
and participated in both Varsity Softball and Track and Field. She held Shot
Put and Discus records at Portville through the early 1990s. As a student, she
attended BOCES Electrical Service in her junior and senior years and was
voted “most likely to succeed”. Eva graduated BOCES in 1979 with the highest
academic average in the four school (BOCES) district.
She attended Alfred State College for two years receiving her Associates
Degree in Electrical Electronics in 1982. When Eva left Alfred, she was first in
her class with a 3.96 academic average.
Eva was employed at Olean Lumber for 33 years until it closed and then Close
Lumber for the past four years. She has a daughter, Beth, who graduated PCS
in 2001.
• Eva coached Little League Baseball, served on the LL board, supervised
LL fund raising efforts, & Umpired LL baseball for years.
• Served both Town of Portville & Village of Portville as Code Inspector.
• Serves and volunteers for the SPCA
• Member of Lions Club
• Volunteers at Local Fire Departments
• She has to be recognized as a central figure in the monumental efforts
provided by this community for the Creative Playground Project of the late
1980’s, early 1990’s at Portville Central School. Eva served as the Purchasing
Agent, Treasurer, and Construction Foreman for this ambitious and
collaborative effort by this community for our school.
Aside from her experiences owning and operating her own business, Eva has
tirelessly volunteered for the causes of others. Her most ambitious and
worthwhile efforts were with the Portville American Legion Auxiliary. She
considers the work she does supporting our nations veterans, their children, and
their communities among the most significant. She has served that capacity as
• V.A. Hospital Representative / 8th District / Dept. of NY
• Auxiliary President for 7 years
• County President for 1 year
In her spare time, she crochets lap robes for disabled veterans. For her 50th
birthday, she raised over two thousand dollars for Veterans Hospital for
Healthcare.
