Joan O’Brien taught elementary classes at Portville Central School from
1978 to 1997. As an active member of the Portville United Methodist Church,
she taught Sunday school at all age levels, directed the Junior Choir, and served
on local, district, and conference committees. In 2002, she became the
manager of Jonah’s Attic, an outlet for clothing and household items for a
minimal cost. Truckloads of clothing and supplies have been donated to
families in Portville and numerous other communities. As a Hospice volunteer,
Interfaith Caregiver driver, AIDS Task Force member and in-school tutor, Joan
exemplifies the best of caregivers in our area.
Michael T. O’Brien personifies the qualities of leadership that reflect the
highest ideals of the Portville Community. He began his career at Portville
Central School in 1967 as a secondary mathematics teacher and assistant
coach. In 1967, he was named high school principal and held that title until
1986 when he accepted the position as Superintendent of Angelica Central
School. He went on to become Superintendent of Cuba and Cuba-Rushford
Central School and Interim Superintendent of seven area schools. Mr. O’Brien
continued to serve the community of Portville as a Cattaraugus County
Legislator until his term ended in 2011 and volunteer for the Portville United
Methodist Church, Interfaith Caregivers and Hospice.
