Portville Hall of Fame
Jeff Latten was born in Olean, New York, at St Francis Hospital, on
November 18th, 1960. He is the son of Dale Latten & Maxine (Cheesebro)
Latten. Jeff is the oldest of four boys: Jeff, Tom, Dennis & David.
He attended Portville Central School K-12, graduating in 1978. He is quick to
point out that he was a member of the McClarin-Dunbar Marching Band
from 1974 through his graduation from school. He played Trumpet, Baritone
& Tuba ... but Baritone was his favorite.
He attended Alfred Agricultural & Technical College from 1978-1980,
completing his Associates Degree in Automotive Mechanics in 1980.
In 1980, his workimg life started, first at Monroe Muffler in Bradford, then
Marra Bros. in Olean, Family Ford in Wellsville, and Harry Graves in
Stannards. On October 27th, 1987, he started his employment at Portville
Central School and he has been serving our school and our community ever
since.
From 1981 to the present he has served in EVERY Asst chief’s position the
dept has.
Jeff began his service to our Portville Fire Department in 1980. He has
served as our Fire Chief for the past ten years. He has served Portville,
Cattaraugus County, and the surrounding areas as Fire Investigator for the
past 25 years. An outstanding contributor, he has been recognized four times
by his peers as “Firefighter of the Year”.
He met his wife Val in 1992 and they were married on June 8th 1996 at the
Presbyterian Church in Portville. He has raised four children as his own:
Amber Harris, Casey Harris, Michelle Freer and Richard Freer.
When asked what he has been most proud of, aside from his family, Jeff
Latten say’s "whether it is the students in our school, Firefighters in our
community, or Portville Sports teams, I like to know we’ve done our part
well. This community has been my whole life."
