Portville Hall of Fame
Originally from Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, Mrs. Verna Clark received
her bachelor’s degree from Fredonia State Teachers College. She also attended
Potsdam State Teachers College where she and 24 other teachers from across
New York State were chosen to develop a curriculum for kindergarten.
Verna taught for 28 years in various districts including Duncansville,
Pennsylvania, Savona, New York, Albion, New York, and at Portville Central
School, where she taught for 15 years. She also tutored and served as a
substitute teacher.
Verna was a 58 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, having
served as the Matron of Tyler Chapter #97, Portville, in 2002 and 2003. She
served as New York State Order of the Eastern Star Representative for
Volunteers for Veterans Medical Center in Batavia, New York, a position she
held for over 24 years. She also served as director of the day care center at
Eastern Star Home in Oriskany, N.Y., as well as volunteering with the Genesis
House, the YMCA, church and school events. Verna remained active in the
community and enjoyed many hobbies, including following family events. She
passed away in September 2010.
Ed and Verna Clark’s careers as educators were just part of the picture. As
one long-time professional acquaintance noted of them, “They like people and
they like life.”
