Duncan C. Dusenbury, Area Settler and Philanthropist, Dead
PORTVILLE – Duncan C. Dusenbury of 48 Maple Ave. died Wednesday (Feb. 16, 1977) at his
home after a long illness.
Born in Tidioute, Pa., on April 21, 1890, he was a son of William Addison and Helen Truesdell
Dusenbury. His father was engaged in the lumbering business in Pennsylvania, and after his death,
the family moved to Portville in 1892.
Mr. Dusenbury was closely connected with the oil industry which followed lumbering as a basic
industry of the area.
He also served as director of a variety of local firms including the First National Bank of Olean,
Messer Oil Corp., D-Y-M Corp., Producers Gas Co., A. Weston Lumber Co., West End
Greenhouses, Otis Eastern Service Co. of Bolivar and the Wheeler and Dusenbury Corp. of
Endeavor, Pa.
Throughout his life, he was active in dairy farming. He established two well-equipped farms which
were later sold.
Mr. Dusenbury’s interests extended far beyond those of industry and business. He was a generous
contributor to the Community Chest and other charities, and was widely known as the donor of
private philanthropies. Mr. Dusenbury was active as a director of the Portville Free Library, the
Chestnut Hill Cemetery and the Randolph Children’s Home.
He was a member of the Portville Presbyterian Church; and he was a charter member of the Holstein
Fresian Association of New York State.
Mr. Dusenbury was preceded in death by two brothers, William A. Dusenbury and Edgar T.
Dusenbury.
Friends may call at the Guenther Funeral Home Inc., Portville, today from 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday
from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held there at 2 p.m. Saturday (February 19,
1977) with the Rev. John Shepard, pastor of the Portville Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial
will be in the family plot in the Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Portville.
